Review of Vega One: Smoothies + On-the-Go Drinks

A few weeks ago, my friends at Vega asked me if I would be interested in testing the new Vega One a reformulated offering of the Whole Food Health Optimizer.

…[We] took into consideration all the feedback that we have received from our fans/consumers over the WFHO years and used that to fuel a new formulation- that tastes better, smoother quality  and has more antioxidants, probiotics and Omega-3’s per scoop. Check out a full write up on the website.

Based on my experience with the Vega Sport line, I jumped at the opportunity to try out the new Vega One – and I was NOT disappointed. Did I mention I also got this cute Vega T-shirt? It makes you look good while you’re drinking your favorite smoothie concoction! ;)

I had the opportunity to try 4 delicious flavors: Natural, Chocolate, Berry, and Vanilla Chai. These nutritional shakes are made to blend in smoothies or mix easily on-the-go.

IMG_8067

And check out the nutritional stats packed into one scoop: protein, probiotics, omega-3, fiber, greens, antioxidants, and 50% of the recommended daily intake of vitamins and minerals. that’s pretty impressive for one little scoop of diary-free, gluten-free, soy-free natural goodness!

I tried these samples several different ways. My favorite was probably the Almond Smoothie I made with the natural flavor. A very quick and simple breakfast smoothie blending:

  • 1 cup Almond Milk
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 packet Vega One Natural
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 4-6 ice cubes

This reminded me of marzipan – love that almond flavor!

After my marathon on Sunday, I planned to mix a packet of Vega One Vanilla Chai with Almond Milk for an on-the-go recovery drink. Unfortunately, I completely forgot to buy almond milk in New Orleans, so my only option was water. I’m not going to suggest that was the best recovery drink I ever had (it was just water & powder), but I was very impressed with how well the Vega One dissolved in tap water after shaking in a water bottle. It went down easy and wasn’t chalky at all!

Last night I decided to make a bedtime snack with the final packet of Vega One Vanilla Chai:

IMG_8280IMG_8283

I blended the packet of Vega One with 1 cup of water and a 12 cubes of ice to make a thick, frosty Vanilla Chai “slushy”. I let it rest in the freezer while I did a yoga session, allowing it to firm up even more for a semifreddo treat!

Will I buy more Vega One in the future?

This is certainly not the cheapest product in the market, but this is one item I’m willing to splurge on. The quality of the ingredients and the amount of nutrients in one scoop is impressive and made throwing together a nutritious smoothie easy, without having as many fresh ingredients on hand. If I found a tub on sale, I think it would be nice to keep one in the pantry for just such situations.

Disclosure: I was provided with samples of Vega One in exchange for my honest opinions about the products. All opinions are my own.

I just bought the vanilla chai flavor – I’m thinking it’s going to my morning smoothie with some coffee flavor and ice for a little latte action. Can’t wait for my samples so I can try more. The chocolate was delish!

    • says

Remember this isn’t protein powder – it’s more like a smoothie powder with protein. I don’t think protein powder in water would taste appetizing at all, but this is actually meant to shake up nicely in liquid, so I think that helped.

      • Scott the Medic says

        Mixes great with water.

I’ve been mixing protein powders with water for a while now, my favourite being “cake batter” flavour of Muscle Milk (in the non-naturals series, because it has the cleanest whey, and least lactose effect on me), of course I’ve been using Vega since then.

I’m disappointed that Brendan let the marketing guys at Sequel Foods lower the protein amount per shake, and increase the quantity of powder, which essentially results in a more expensive shake. (ie; akin to a drug dealer cutting his product, once he’s got everyone hooked) Had I known they were discontinuing the old Vega, I’d have stocked up.

I’m probably going to try and find a quality protein powder to cut my Vega with, so I can extend the usage of each container. 3.40-3.80$/shake is starting to get pricey! I was happy with 2.50$.

        • Brian R says

That’s exactly what I was thinking Scott. I am annoyed that they decreased the serving size so that there’s more servings per container and tried to trick us into believing that we’re getting more because there’s more servings. They increased the scoop size but now it’s 1 scoop per serving instead of 2 so you’re actually getting a few servings (of the old, bigger serving size) less per container for the same price but they don’t tell you that and make is sound like you’re getting more which is really annoying. They must assume that their customers are a little dense to think that we’d fall for that and it seems like an insult to our/my intelligence. That’s what annoyed me the most is the misleading advertising. For a company that seems very ethically-minded this is disappointing.

I have loved every Vega product I’ve tried, but they do tend to be more expensive. It’s definitely good quality for the money though when I’m in the mood to splurge.

This is such great news! Thanks for the review- I’ve always loved the nutrition and ingredients in Vega, but found the original formula a bit, well, hard to swallow. I can’t wait to try this new version now.

I never tried the old formula, so I can’t compare the improvement, but I think you’ll be pleased with the texture of this one.

  4. says

You make it sound so yummy! I really want to try it but have a hard time laying down the bucks for it because I’ve got some other protein powder I need to use up first, but I hate the stuff!

Remember that this isn’t a protein powder, although it has protein in it. It doesn’t have as much protein as I use when I’m looking to make a protein shake, it’s more of a smoothie add in with TONS of nutrients and some protein.

    • says

Although I KNOW that Vanilla Chai would have been better with Almond Milk, it was definitely tastier than just the Vega Protein would have been (remember, this is different). Poor planning on my part though! :)

  5. Alex Ziolkowski says

Tried the Vanilla Chai, I was very surprised as to how good it tastes! I like to mix mine with just water in the morning and with sunflower milk as a mid-morning snack. I get that extra energy without that bloated or full feeling. With being on the go, Vega makes it easy to maintain a healthy balance. Great job guys!

  6. deshon says

I make the exact same Chocolate Almond Banana Smoothie with the Vega One Natural Shake. All of the ingredients are the same except I use rice or soy milk instead of almond milk and I add dates. Delicious!

  7. Jason T. says

I haven’t tried the new Vega One shake yet, but am looking forward to it! I have a stock of the WFHO I picked up on sale recently, and am afraid that I’ll like the new stuff so much that I’ll not want the old stuff anymore!

I’ve tried and/or use several of the Vega products and I love them! YES, they do cost more than some of the competition. YES, some of the comp. may taste better and go down smoother. YES, other products may be more readily available.

BUT, from a health/nutrition stand-point, Vega products are far superior to other products out there. Top quality plant ingredients in their purest form possible. While other products tend to have a ingredient list that only a chemist would understand, Vega has chosen not to go that route. Bottom line – you get what you pay for. If you want an all natural premium product and don’t mind paying a bit more for it, look for Vega products. p.s. don’t let your local Visalus distributor tell you differant (after-all, they are working on their “free BMW”)

    • says

YES – 100%, sometimes you have to pay more for good quality, but you get what you pay for. The quality of Vega products always amazes me and I never have a problem recommending them to anyone!

  8. Sherrie says

I love the Vega products. Mt a favorite are the sports line bars and energizer. I use the energizer on my long run days and am always amazed at the energy it gives me to power through even on my most tired beginnings. I really don’t mind splurging on these products because they are so good, and good for you. There are some items I pay more for at the grocery store, because they are vegan or because I have heard such great things about them…Amazing Grass meal being one of them.
I try to stock up when vega goes on sale either at vegan bodybuilding.com or at veganproteins.com. Vegan Proteins is such a great small company with exceptional customer service that I actually enjoy spending my $ there on these products.
I would eventually like to try the chocolate vega one. I have tried the old recipe, every flavor I think, so it would be interesting to taste the difference. I love, love, love the vanilla chai flavor and actually have two tubs here now!
By the way…lovin the shirt! Great review!

    • says

I’m with you – worth the price, especially when on sale. I need to check out the sites you mentioned for discounts!

      • Sherrie says

Definitely check out veganproteins.com…they not only have great sales ( and discounts with codes they frequently post on their Facebook page) but they also send special treats in adddition to the stuff you order. Like I said, they are such a great little company!

  9. Michelle M says

Tried the new vega one chocolate and absolutely love it! It is by far better tasting then the old version.

  10. says

I must admit I have never tried Vega. I can appreciate a good supplement because goodness knows we need our nutrition and sometimes a smoothie is a great way to get some protein and nutrients. We have been splurging on quality fruits and veggies. When I have everyone help outwith the food prep we are able to eat raw fruits and veggies during the day and feel so much better from it. :)

I am enjoying my migration from the traditional breakfast to Vega immensely. Getting 100% of the RDI is awesome. I am confused though. The new packaging says the new Vega is only 50% of the RDI, the volumn in of the product has not changed, nor has the price. How many 100% RDI servings are in a large container of the new product? Thank you.

    • says

I don’t work for Vega, so I’m not sure about the change in the RDI and volume. This was my first time trying the product actually, I never had the old WFO, but I thought 50% was pretty good! I eat a lot of other fresh fruits and veggies, so for me it’s a good way to jumpstart your nutrients for the day. :)

      • Lee says

Yeah it’s one scoop with half the amount of protein at the same old price. The “New” vega One cost more per gram of protein than the “old” WFHO. I think this was a change they should not have made. They have cut it in half but kept the same price. It makes me sad to think that this once awesome company is now headed down the road of “just in it for the cash”.

        • Kathryn says

@ Lee, that was what I was getting at, thank you. Checked the new WFHO product on the self, 42.5gm scoop = 50%RDI, 850gm in a canister so if you wanted 100%RDI, only TEN servings in the new product compared to FIFTEEN in the old WFHO. Or if one wanted to look at it a different way, THIRTY 50% servings in the old Vega WFHO product, only TWENTY 50% servings in the new WFHO. Quite a difference in servings and I completely agree, looks like Vega is just in it for the cash which is very sad. Tarnishing an extremely good product and ripping off the consumer who is trying to eat healthier. Did Vega really think people would not notice such an obviously huge difference? Extremely disappointed.

I was given a small cup of this as a taste test in my local grocery store, and I was prepared for a familiar taste and flavour of most of those other drinks and I can truly say it is so so delicious! and I was given a sachet as a sample and took it home, I had it for lunch the following day, it was the chocolate flavour, I mixed in in my blender with water, frozen strawberries and a scoop of organic peanut butter, it was like a full fat creamy smoothy that kept me going for hours! I swear I felt energised after as well….great new drink/suppliment…and I am justa busy full time working Mom.
    :)

  13. Jeff says

I notice the the RDI and Protein difference as well. Also you may recall the old version had 15g of Dietary Fibre per serving (2 scoops), the new version only has 6g?? I suppose most people already get a fair share of fibre from whole grains, etc. Assuming that is true with the others, most people could achieve 50% or more RDI from the foods they eat anyway (If you eat relatively well), so having a 100% shake, on top of possibly another 50-100% from food depending, also has implications as well. Too much of one thing can turn into a bad thing so while I am disapointed they lowered it, I can understand why they did it as well. It is also nice to have the visuals on what the Probiotics, Greens, Omega-3′s and Antioxidants actually equate to.

  14. JOY says

I am wondering why I get bloated and constipated taking vega as well as vega whole food. Some other users are experiencing the same side effects.
    Thank You

  15. Jen_S says

I have always mixed my Vega with water, and never really had an issue with the taste or texture. That said, the new formula is super smooth and creamy, and the chocolate is so chocolatey!

Did notice the gap in protein, but have solved it by mixing 1 scoop of chocolate Vega One with one scoop of the vanilla Vega Sport Performance Protein. Still get the great flavor, but 40g of protein to start the day!

Has anyone ever mixed their Vega with brewed coffee instead of water? I think I may try it this week as I don’t usually have room for a full coffee after my shake.

  16. rafa says

hi there..this will be my first time using VEGA ONE…what will be the best time to drink this power poder?..thank you so much!

  17. Shehla says

I wen to my local vitamin Shoppe and asked fro soem samples, and I have to say I didn’t like the Vanilla chai at all. But I did like the berry one and so I purchased a small tub of it.
I am plannig of juicing for the next 3 days, can I use Vega one as a part of my juicing?

  18. tanscrazydaisy says

I don’t mind the price of Vega One considering that a McDonald’s breakfast costs more and is worse. I also don’t mind the changes compared to the WFHO, since I was barely able to drink it (Chocolate was nasty), so if I can’t drink it, it offers no nutritional value to me and waste of money. One chocolate is a huge improvement and I also like Chai & Berry. Sometimes I drink it after a good bike workout. The more intense rides, I switch to Vega Sport Performance Protein (Chocolate, Vanilla I found to be disgusting). Their recovery drink, I’m less impressed, as I find Hammer Nutrition Recoverite as my benchmark. The Endurance Gel and Endurance bar I like. Not so their Electrolyte Hydrator (I reach for Gu Brew instead).

So… I use what works for me… through trial and error.

  19. Kimberly M says

I absolutely LOVE the Vega Sport Pre-Workout Energizer and suck down a glass before any run over an hour long and before races. I also use their Recovery Smoothie after my more brutal runs. I want to try the Vega One since I’ve used different flavors of the previous version for travel food and it was great for nutrition but no spectacular for taste. I’ve also had the Vega Energizing Smoothies and I like the Choc-o-lot and Vanilla Almondilla just fine. I think my first tub of Vega One will probably be the Vanilla Chai since it’s getting pretty good reviews.

  20. KATHY says

I am thinking about starting on Vega One I have read al the comments not one person talks about how it makes them feel or if they notice a change in there all over health..I was looking for that type od feedback. KATHY IN SEATTLE

    THIS PRODUCT IS DANGEROUS!
Can’t speak for the VEGA ONE but their protein powders did me in.
After a few uses I was VIOLENTLY ill. The product contains saviseed which to some people creates a violent allergy which includes, sweats, chills, extreme vomiting and diarrhea. Never felt worse in my life. A few hours after my first time drinking it I felt pretty nauseous, thought maybe I worked out too hard, the second time I was on the floor calling my husband to come home because I thought I needed to go to the hospital. No question that it was the Vega. Don’t believe me? Google it, you’ll find hundreds of people with the same experience. They need to put a warning label on the package, its just a mater of time before someone gets seriously hurt. Never, never, never again would I support this product.

    • says

SEVERE VOMITING, DIARRHEA, SWEATING AND CHILLS. I was so violently Ill from this product I could not get to the phone to call anyone because the symptoms were to severe for me to move. I thought I was going to die on the bathroom floor. After that horrible ordeal I thought maybe it was just a coincidence that I got sick. Maybe I had just gotten the flu or something because I had drank it in the past without issues. But a month later I decided to try it again and within an hour I was violently ill again all the same symptoms as the first time. My body was trying desperately to purge this, I had to drink water just to have something to throw up because the dry heaving was so intense. This stuff is poison to the body whether you have a reaction or not and I would never recommend anyone using it.

    • Mitch R says

I am having that exact same reaction right now. I wasn’t sure what was causing the nausea and vomiting I experienced the other day after having a Vega smoothie. I just had another Vega Energizing smoothie an hour ago and now I know that was it. I was sick for most of the day when I last took it and now it looks like I’m in for a long night. There is clearly some ingredient in this product that is not right.

      • Karen W says

Just had the exact same problem. First time I thought something else was the culprit . After all, I had no issues with the original version. Just spent a horrible day with nausea, vomiting, dry heaves and diarrhea. I am tossing this out and will be on the watch for saviseed in case that is the ingredient causing this distress.

        • Amanda says

I have just had the exact same problem. This is my second bag of vega energizing smoothie, had no problems with the first bag but think this bag has a new formula. 8 days ago I made a smoothie for breakfast and an hour later starting getting violently sick. I decided to try again for breakfast today and within 2 hours I had stomache cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. I was so lucky my husband was home as was too sick to call anyone.

          • Karen W says

Poor you! I was in the same situation..not sure what I would have done if my husband had not been home. In one day I purged 4lbs of water etc from my digestion. This product needs a warning label!!

    • Rosie says

I too had a horrible reaction! I had a sample pack and wanted to give it a try. First, the taste was awful. Second, about 30 minutes later I kept getting up to go to the bathroom feeling I was about to puke. I just kept dry heaving thinking I was going to hold it down. 10 minutes later I was not so lucky. My body purged the Vega One out of my system (and I was at work)! I think it’s interesting about this saviseed. I’ve never heard of it, but it could be what caused it. I drink plenty of other protein shakes and never had this type of reaction. I will not be recommending this product to anyone.

I was just wondering if it can be mixed with regular milk? I am not a vegan or even a vegetarian I keep seeing Vega one everywhere an wanted to try it out. Iv looked on there website and doesn’t say anything about mixing it with regular milk (assuming the products for vegans) but I’m just wondering if it would do something with the stuff that’s in it that would make me sick. Please help!
    Thank you,
