Best of 2012: Race Year in Review

I’m back with another post for today! I was so excited to share my Zensah sports bra review this morning, but I also wanted to look back at this year in races. So two posts for the price of one today. Smile

Best of 2012-Race

This year actually felt a little light on races for me. With the move to Colorado over the summer, I just didn’t have the time I usually do to fit things in. In fact, I didn’t do ANY multisport races (triathlon or duathlon) this year. That’s crazy! I guess I’ll make up for that in 2013 with Ironman, right?

But, even with a shorter list, I did run 1 ultra and 2 marathons. Not bad at all!

Race Recap: Jed Smith 50K

My first race of the year was also my longest – a 50K! That’s 31.06 miles, in case you don’t want to do the math. This was my first ultra distance race and I had a great experience, even though it was a 6 loop course (which I actually like!). Finish Time: 5:11:31

Jed Smith 50K - 31 Miles!!

Race Recap: New Orleans Marathon

Just 4 weeks after Jed Smith 50K, I raced the New Orleans Marathon. I was so nervous going into the race after not being able to cover the miles I hoped between the 50K and race day, but I smashed by previous record and ended up with a 20 minute improvement on my marathon time!!  Finish Time: 3:55:11

New Orleans Marathon

Run the Rocks 10K

Just 2 weeks after the marathon, I planned a FUN race weekend with a 10K on Saturday and half marathon on Sunday. This race kicked off the weekend on the trails and I was surprised how good I felt. Finish Time: 56:52

Trail 10K

Publix Half Marathon

I was definitely feeling my legs on this second race of the weekend, luckily the debut of my rainbow tutu helped keep me going! Running just for fun to keep my “streak” alive – it was a great weekend. Finish Time: 1:57:28

Publix Half

Underwearness 5K

My first race in Colorado, just a week after we moved cross-country from Atlanta! This little 5K around the Denver Zoo was a great introduction to running at altitude, something that still has me panting for breath more often than I’d like. Finish Time: 26:29

Underwearness 5K

Denver Half Marathon Recap

After a rough training cycle trying to get ready for the marathon, I ran the Denver Half Marathon not as a checkpoint race, but as a supported training run. With a couple miles before and another one after, this race was part of a 16 mile run. I will be this altitude thing eventually!  Finish Time: 2:04:22

Denver Half Marathon

Color Me Rad 5K Recap

This was the most fun I’ve had at a race!! Run through a beautiful field, with mountains in the background, and people throwing and shooting paint at you. AWESOME!! No watch, all fun! Finish Time: Unknown

Color Run

Marine Corps Marathon Recap

And finally, the race that proves you can absolutely run a marathon for fun! After sub-par training, WAY less miles than usual, and no expectations, I had a blast running this marathon! 25 minutes slower than my PR race in March, but not every race is about getting across the finish line fast. Sometimes it’s proving that you can finish and smile! Finish Time: 4:19:41

Marine Corps Marathon

Turkey Trot

We ran the Turkey Trot in Vail on Thanksgiving morning – it’s a tradition to run a race that morning, so we found one while we were vacationing. This was my first run since the marathon, so it was just a good time running with my best blend, Laura. I didn’t post a recap of that race, but I did write a post BEFORE to help inspire you to run through the holidays. Finish Time: Unknown

Vail Turkey Trot

So technically there is one race missing from this list – the Stocking Run in Superior, Colorado. BUT, I didn’t even take a photo at that race. It wasn’t fast, but I was pretty proud of conquering this “mountain” at mile 2 without walking. Smile

Questions for you:

  1. What was your favorite race of the year?
  2. Any races you’re already excited about for next year?

I ran my first race ever this year and was so hooked that I completed 2 more! My favorite had to have been the 10k. It was along the Chicago waterfront and absolutely beautiful and fun. I impressed myself with how well I did and how I was able to push through some harder parts of the run. I want to run a 1/2 marathon next year but I can’t decide which one!!

I didn’t realize your first race EVER was this year – what a HUGE accomplishment! 1/2 marathon is a great goal, you have plenty of base to make that happen. It’s a great distance, I always say I should do more of them. :)

That’s funny, because it seemed like a short list to me. I’m obviously crazier than I realize. ;)

What an awesome year you had, Heather! I didn’t know you ran a 50k in the beginning of the year… I think that’s before I found you. :) Congrats! I’m excited to see what 2013 has for you. Enjoy the long holiday weekend!

Thanks! The 50K seems like years ago, it’s strange that it was just early this year. I hope you have been enjoying your holiday weekend, I absolutely have. :)

I had NO idea what times were supposed to be, but I read in a magazine recently that it was a good time. Apparently the longer the better for me. :)

That’s a great year right there! Still so bummed I had to back out of the Atlanta Half and still loving that skirt.

Nice job, Heather!

Thanks Christie! It has been a great year, but I’m ready to get faster again next year!! :) Altitude has made me slow, but I’m going to overcome it in 2013! Can’t wait to read about your new baby soon!!

How can running in races not be FUN when wearing a tutu? Was the guy in blue your pacer in the New Orleans Marathon? Following that for 26.2 miles would be easy. ;)

Exactly – tuts rock! I didn’t even notice the guy in blue until you said that. It’s funny when I’m actually racing for time I don’t notice normal things like that. :)

Dang girl, that’s a lot of races! Very awesome, congrats!
My favorite race of the year would have to be the Marine Corps Marathon. While it wasn’t easy, it was my very first marathon and I accomplished my goal of running 26 miles in my 26th year!

My view of race numbers is apparently skewed, I didn’t think this was very much. :) You did AWESOME at MCM, especially for your first marathon. Have you started thinking about #2 yet?

I seriously love your tutu–and how happy you look in every single one of these pictures! It almost makes me want to run ;)

I think everyone needs a tutu – just makes things more fun! :)

I had to point out that your 50K time is less than my marathon time. :) But I’ll be fixing that in 10 months (easily). I’d like to do a 50K. because it’s only FIVE MORE MILES. (the longest 5 miles ever).

Ha! That just means it’s time to run another marathon, because I KNOW you are faster than me. I seem to do better the longer the distance, I’m just that stubborn. :)

And what you just wrote about the 50K is exactly why I tried the distance…not much farther! :)

First off, I love your racing tutu! So quirky and fun! You had a great 2012. I’m so impressed with the distances (and quantity of races too). It was fun getting to know you better in this post. By the way, I’d LOVE to move to CO!

Why thank you! Distances are all relative, I’ve just been running for a while and tend to enjoy longer distances. And I am SO happy I’ve gotten the chance to move to CO, i love it here!
