About a month ago, Kirk and I started following Jillian Michael’s Making the Cut workouts. Well…as much as I follow any written program. :) I shared my initial thoughts about halfway through, so it’s now time to share my thoughts on the entire program.
I started this as way to kickstart my metabolism and help drop a few pounds. As I’m still training for a marathon, I customized the workouts to take out the cardio portions and really make the workouts strength-focused.
What I loved?
I really enjoyed getting back to the gym. Having a FREE gym less than a mile from the house is a HUGE perk in our new home. Getting back to the gym and having access to free weights, machines, and equipment I don’t have at home is fun! I still firmly believe you can have an amazing workout at home, but it’s fun to be back in the gym.
I also really enjoyed the variety in the workouts – changing things up every week was fun and kept you guessing. I loved learning new moves and new ways to challenge my body. Great inspiration for new workouts!
What I didn’t love?
I actually wanted to do a second circuit. The workouts would have been a bit long for two full circuits, so I know why they were written the way they were, but I wanted to spend a little more time on each movement. And it was sometimes frustrating looking up every move, because so many were completely new to me.
What’s in it for you?
I mentioned on Tuesday that I am back to writing my own workouts. I’ve been very inspired by the Making the Cut workouts, but I’ve put my own spin on them. I’m retaining the split workout schedule to really focus on building strength (as opposed to full-body workout).
This workout focuses on back, biceps, shoulders, and core – with just a little legs for good measure. For me, I’m doing plenty of leg work already with the hills and marathon training.

Questions for you:
-
What workout program have you done that has refreshed your outlook?
-
I’m curious – do you like when I share workouts or are you doing your own thing anyway?

I’ve done her 30 day shred and loved it! I didn’t really like her on the BL, but she’s a great trainer on video.

I never really watched BL, so it’s funny that I did the program. I’ve seen it maybe twice. :)
Ohhh fun! Love the looks of this. And I had the same issues with MTC. I hated doing moves only 1x through.
PS – I saw Dr. Nik yesterday and he was all concerned because you didn’t show for an appt that morning (I’m guessing one you had scheduled from awhile ago) and they couldn’t reach you since the number was disconnected. I had to remind him you moved to CO. He said “Oh. Well that certainly explains it”.

Wierd – I know I didn’t make an appt with Nik and I haven’t changed my number – very, very odd…
Glad you liked the workout – thanks for pinning! :)
Right now I am doing Tina’s bootcamp, but I like it when other people post workouts. I’ll just have to pin it for later!

That’s great that you came up with one you like. People forget that you can always modify! Love those wood chops – great core work!

I’m just glad the program got me back into weights and provided great inspiration. Wood Chops are so fun!
I still want to check out making the cut! Keep posting your workouts and I won’t have to! LOL

Will do – glad they help you!! :)
I love seeing other people’s workouts! I don’t think I’ve ever exactly followed someone else’s blog plan, but it always gives me great ideas for moves/shaking things up/adding an oldie I’d forgotten I liked. And I know it’s more than possible to stay fit without a gym…but I love gyms. How do you get free access?? Jealous :)

That’s a great point! I’ve done a few others, but if nothing else it’s great to get ideas (just like I did from MTC).
Our homeowners dues here cover access to 4 gyms – it’s crazy and very cool. And it’s about the same price as we paid for no amenities in Atlanta. Score!
I usually do my own thing anyway, but I like the workouts since I at least steal a move or two, even if I don’t do the entire circuit.

Awesome – I’m glad I asked, it’s good to get feedback. :)

I love when you, or any blogger for that matter, shares workouts! I love to see what others are doing, its inspiring for me. I also love when people review programs they have done. I am working through Jillian Michael’s Ripped in 30 now! Had to give up Insanity for a while due to an injury, but I will be back to conquer that beast soon!
