I was flipping through Runner’s World this weekend while sitting on the floor of our empty house in Atlanta and I noticed a chart of marathon training dates. It listed several Fall marathons and the suggested start date for training, using the typical 16 week training model. I was a little surprised when I saw the date for the Marine Corps Marathon – July 9th.
Oh yea…I guess that is getting closer. In fact, I had thought about doing another 50K leading up to this marathon. Hmm…I guess I really need to get back into a consistent running schedule again!
- Do I have a plan written yet? No
- Am I freaking out? Actually, No
I’m pretty proud of that right now, actually. There’s a lot going on in my life right now and it would be really easy (and typical) for me to get stressed out. Instead, I’m taking a different approach.
Over the next 4 weeks, I’m going to get back into a running habit and build back to 30 miles a week. Consistency is the most important this month for me, I’m less concerned about structured workouts than I usually am. My goal is to fit in the mileage I need as we get settled in and figure out our new routine. You may have noticed for FitFluential #Proof pictures recently on Instagram & Twitter – it’s great accountability to get it done no matter what the weather.
That will leave me with 12 weeks of good structured training time – plenty of time for me. It also gives me time to plan my schedule without feeling rushed and find races I want to do along the way.
This is SOOOO not my normal approach, but I feel good about it with where I am right now. Different times call for different tactics!

Exciting! I know you’re ready to get back out there. Your discipline and dedication throughout a big move is impressive!
Thanks Laura – I’ve had my moments. :) You’re the dedication queen right now!
Girl you’ve got this & are going to ROCK that marathon! I’m not running any races this Fall which actually feels weird but it’s SO hot down here in FL right now that I know I would hate training over the summer. My next race isn’t till January so plenty of time to train…& hopefully in cooler temps!

I can’t imagine training for a Fall marathon in Florida, so I completely understand that. Georgia was always barely tolerable with many pre-dawn runs to avoid some of the heat. What race are you planning in January?
No Fall (or ever) marathon in the plan for me! :) I like halves, but don’t have any planned right now! :) :)

You don’t have to run a marathon, although be careful saying never. Every time I’ve said never, I’ve ended up doing it (Ironman, Ultra…). :)
Le sigh. You know how badly I want to do another marathon. Patience. That’s what I’m going for right now. Hoping for the Snickers in Albany one in March. I’m actually thinking of the MCM for fall next year instead of Chicago. So many great races to do!

You will do another one, you’re doing the right thing taking it easy for now! Snickers is supposed to be a great marathon and I’ll let you know my thoughts on MCM after October. Plenty of time to enjoy all these races in the future. :)
We run the Thanksgiving 1/2 each year and I’ve started slowly getting in my training and building my legs strength with weights too. I don’t get stressed bc it only makes me crazy and takes the fun out of it. I want to run bc it’s fun and stress makes it more of a chore. Good luck!

That’s an awesome tradition – I hope we can find one like that our here in Colorado. Good for you keeping the stress out of the picture, it can definitely take the fun out of running!
How fun!! Keep us posted on your schedule! I would run another 1/2, but I have desire to run a full marathon. Kudos to you girl!

1/2 marathons are so much fun – just long enough to really feel accomplished, but not as painful as a full. I guess I like that kind of pain. :)
good luck with your training. cannot wait to follow your days leading up to the race! you will rock it, i just know it :)

I’m so ready to share more about training again too, because that will mean life is more normal and I’m getting more time to train! :)
Although I don’t have a marathon under my belt, I’ve been approaching my upcoming October half marathon in a similar fashion. I’ve been easing into it to prevent burn-out like before and trying to just enjoy it before upping the ante in a couple of weeks. Then again, I might just be pacing my friend for that race, which makes me feel less pressured and stressed out. We shall see!

That will be your third half marathon, right? We should meet up for a long run sometime, it’s always fun to have company for part of a long distance morning. :)
Ahh I didn’t know you were running this too!! We’ll definitely have to meet up in DC! I might be reaching out to you when I have questions about training since you’re such a pro. :)
